『子どもの日』を英語で説明しよう！ Explain "Children's Day" in English !

今日は子どもの日ですね。子どもたちの健康・成長・幸せを願い、あちこちで鯉のぼりが飾られていました。

　５月５日は『子どもの日』です。日本では昔から祝われている伝統的な行事ですが、みなさんは英語で説明できますか？簡単に説明すると『子どもの日』は子どもたち……特に男の子の健康・成長・幸せを願う行事ですね。別名『男の子の日』。（『女の子の日』は３月３日です。）

 May 5th is "Children's Day". It's a traditional event celebrated in Japan for a long time, but can you explain it in English? Simple explanation: "Children's day" is an event which wishes for children's health, growth, and happiness ...... especially boys. It is also called "Boy's Festival".("Girl's Festival" is on March 3rd.)

鯉のぼりを飾るのは鯉のようにたくましく育ってほしいからです。

The reason why carp streamers are decorated is because we want children to become tough like carps.

菖蒲（しょうぶ）は香りが強いので災いや病気から守ってくれると言われています。

The strong smell of iris is said to protect children from evil and disease.

菖蒲の花を飾ったらきれいですし、菖蒲の葉はお風呂に入れたら良い匂いがします。

Decorating iris flower is beautiful, and putting iris leaves to bath makes a good smell.

柏餅は子孫繁栄を願っています。

Kashiwa mochi wishes for continued fertility in their family.

兜（かぶと）と鎧（よろい）は子どもを守るために飾られます。

Samurai helmet and Samurai armor are decirated to protect children.

ただ最近の日本の家はせまいので兜だけ飾る人もいます。

But recent houses in Japan are small so there are people who only decorate samurai helmet.

代わりに鯉のぼりや兜・鎧の掛け軸を壁に飾るのも悪くないですね。

Posting a tapestry of carp strainers, samurai helmet, or samurai armor on the wall is not bad too.
